Media interest recently on the plight of unpaid “interns” highlights that for most employees the wage they are paid as their employer’s exchange for their labour is of paramount interest.
Subject to the protection of the National Minimum Wage, what you are paid will be fixed as one of the terms of your employment when you start any new job. There may be scope to negotiate with an employer but, in weaker economic climes, the potential employee may not have the strongest bargaining position. Your Employment Contract will normally contain your employer’s obligation to pay you an agreed wage (and any other financial benefits). Look to this as a starting point if you have a concern that you are not receiving your proper wage! Flexlaw can assist if you have a claim for any underpayment, delayed payment or unlawful deductions from wages.
